The antiscalant dosage is one of the most commonly used pretreatment processes for the protection of reverse osmosis membranes. Antiscalant protects RO membranes and prevents accumulation of parameters such as hardness, silica, iron, manganese, aluminum, copper, cobalt, organic matter, barium, strontium, calcium fluoride, calcium phosphate etc. Antiscalant should be dosed at the appropriate concentration prior to the system in order to prevent the adhesion of the parameters to the membranes. The antiscalant type and dosing concentration is chosen according to raw water structure and reverse osmosis system configuration and operating conditions. Care should be taken to ensure that the chosen antiscalant is a brand approved by the membranes’ manufacturers.
